Personal Profile
I started learning Wing Chun in 2003 under Si-Fu Steven Girard at his school in Crouch Hill, North London. Steven started learning Wing Chun back in the seventies and through his martial art journey has studied under various great masters who individually specialised in different aspects of this wonderful art. Over the years he has trained in China, Japan and Canada.
In 2003, I walked into Si-Fu Steven Girard’s Wing Chun school with the cocky expectation that I would be accepted immediately, which to my detriment, was quite a naïve attitude to have.
When I was asked ‘Why do you want to learn Wing Chun?’ I had no answer and following on from my poor response and attitude I was turned away.
I went away and thought long and hard about why I wanted to learn Wing Chun and returned back to the school the following week with a more humble and respectful attitude. This time when I was asked the question again, I said ‘I want to learn Wing Chun to master the art and experience every benefit that it offers me’ which are plentiful.
In 2004 I begged my master to teach me privately, to my surprise he said yes and I have never looked back.
I completed the Wing Chun system in 2014, including all open hand forms, weapon forms, wooden dummy form and Chi Sau, Lap Sau and Pak Sau drills. To complete all this would seem like the end, you would be so wrong, as that was only the beginning.
The reason I say this is because there are many, many aspects to perfect once the system has been completed, such as; Perfecting your own self expression towards techniques, movement, posture, balance, mind control, economy of motion, and many more. The art of perfecting Wing Chun is perfecting the art of fluent movement and total control.
As my master has always told me ‘Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect’ so I continue to seek this perfection with the upmost respect and love for this wonderful art.
